Caritas Speakers, my impressions
Earlier, I posted a question asking if anyone had experience with the Caritas kit. Judging from the number of viewings, I guess many others are interested. While I didn't get any qualitative answers, I decided to get one anyway. Since the speakers were to go in my garage to keep me in musical company as I did my woodworking hobby, I constructed the enclosures to the given dimensions from 3/4" Baltic birch plywood. My impressions: I have previously built a pair of Overnight Sensations and a pair Sopranos. Obviously, the Sopranos, at over twice the price, were far superior, with better definition and fuller sound. Although the Caritas units are larger than either the Sopranos or the Overnight Sensations, I found myself less impressed, overall, with them. Bottom line... I think they are fine for my intended purpose, but I prefer the others when I'm sitting and listening. I'd be interested if anyone else has something to say about the Caritas Speakers.

Since you asked,,,,, I just finished up my build of the Caritas and quite frankly I'm pretty impressed!
I had three reasons for building these. 1) The charity aspect, 2) I wanted to try a hardwood baffle, and 3) I wanted to hear a Jeff Bagby crossover.
I just did the final assembly yesterday and they are playing now so they only have a couple of hours on them. Granted, they were a little rough sounding when I first powered them up, but today they are sounding quite nice! They are definitely not the last word in resolution or bottom end extension but hey,,,, what do you expect for the price? For the $200.00 I have into them I am very impressed! The tweeters in my first real build, (The Slant 6's) were $140.00 for the pair and yes, they are sweeter sounding and throw images to the outside of the box, but you would expect that for the price.
The Caritas do image quite well though everything so far is locked between them. I'll bet with some time on them they will open up a bit.
Until now they have been playing all by themselves. Later today I'll add in my sub. I'm betting that will help quite a bit.
I'll add a couple of picks and close by saying,,,,, I'm very happy with them and feel they sound way better than they should for the money!

For the price of these speakers, I think the Caritas sound pretty darn good!

I think I posted my impressions too soon. Now that they have more hours on them, I like them,
especially given my purpose for them which is to provide music for me when I'm engaging in my woodworking hobby. I'd have to say, I got more than my doĺlar's worth of value from them.

The garage may be (likely is) a pretty tough acoustic environment. Try bringing them in the house and see how they sound?

Hi new to this forum but definitely not audio or building. I have built more home subs than anything, some speaker kits. Re-built some x-overs but never went as far as designing them. Anyway I too was wondering about this kit to install in some Thiel CS1 cabinets that I got from the thrift store. Thoughts? They do have the original x-overs intact but just about 30 years old and hard to match anything to them. I thought a kit would be the way to go and save these vintage speakers from the junk yard. if not this kit then a step or two higher? Thanks in advance.
