Hi All,
I'm new here on the site. I recently decided to build the continuum speaker. Sadly the woofer was out of stock for a while (back now and on the way). So I decided to start off with Jeff's bass module. I wasn't sure what to expect but I figured I would try it with my old trusty jbl 610hl's. There are poorly matched (and the jbl was a super cheap but ok sounding offering) but I was amazed at how good they sounded... 88 db vented boxes and they never sounded so good!!! I can't wait for the drivers and crossover show up for the continuum's! I am done the cabinets for the continuum's...as far as I can without having the driver in hand anyway.
I have a good deal more experience building cabinets than speakers so I appreciate any feedback. I kind of enjoy the fact that Jeff didn't release a " plan" for his three way design but rather a guideline. It allowed some creativity on my part which I really found rewarding.
So the woofer cabinets dimensions are 14 x14x 22 making for 52 liter internal volume. I added some super cool legs to bring it to the right height for stands. A Bit of bracing and internal crossovers...maybe 48 litres? They are Baltic birch finished in walnut veneer. They look great and sound great; though I have no fancy measuring devices...the port is 3x10.5 inches and flared on one end. I really wasn't sure about the flare but it sounds pleasing so far.
Any advice and feedback is welcome...
A confession though... While swilling beer and playing with my new table saw ( I do not condone this in any way...)' I accidentally made the continuum cabinets a half inch too wide. They looked so good that I didn't want to cut them up to fix them so I was wondering? What would be the best choice here...
1. Do nothing because it will sound just fine with a 5%bigger cabinet.
2. Add 1/4 inch shim internally to each side to fix the internal volume but thicken the side walls of the cabinet to 1 inch.
3. Chop up the cabinets because they scream failure and I will never know if they sound right as Jeff intended.
Haha...
Thanks guys. Cool forums and I'm glad I can finally add something as opposed to just learning from all of you.
Cheers
Derek
I am having trouble adding images so I will post them shortly from my pc... iPad just isn't up to the task.

I really like the 50's style legs. Can you tell us where you found them?
Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark.
I bought the legs from Lee valley (leevalley.com). They had a few interesting options in their hardware section. I think I paid about 10 dollars a piece for them. They are quite heavy and made of cast zinc. I was concerned that they might resonate or colour the music somehow but there doesn't seem to be any issues so far. I thought I might fill in the hollow part with epoxy or spray foam to dampen them if there was a problem.
An added bonus is they are 4 inches high so I connected all the wires through the bottom of the cabinet. This allows the speaker to be rotated any direction so I can try some different options. Also I can turn them backwards when the nieces come over to avoid dented domes...
Cheers.

a half inch wider Continuum won't make any difference.
