Hello everyone, I'm new here. After lots of research I have ALMOST decided on the Statement 2's for my main stereo system. They will replace some inexpensive AR's that I got at a garage sale several years ago.( I plan to use then for target practice) Woodworking is my hobby so building the boxes is not an issue.
Now, here's a few questions- try not to laugh....
1) I have a rebuilt Dyna ST 70 putting out 40 good watts per channel. Will this be adequate to power the Statements in my 16 X 24 living room? I am not a bass fiend...
2) The 5 foot tall transmission-line design were vetoed by my Luddite spouse. She did agree to the sealed version, though. Now, to bring the tweeter up to ear level would require a stand and that will bring them back to the 5 foot height and ruin my marriage. So here's my idea= dropping the woofers to the bottom (WWMTM). I can't see how this would make a huge difference but what do I really know.
3. Will the sealed version be dramatically bass deficient as compared to the vented one? Or just a little...

1. 40 watts isn't enough for anything but lower volumes in a normal sized room. I usually recommend 125+ watts at 8 ohms minimum for all of the designs Curt and I have created. Also and this is a BIG ALSO, your amp must be capable of 4 ohm loads
2. WWMTM has been done but we can't recommend it for them to sound as designed. Here's my recommendation. If you want shorter speakers in the 3 1/2' - 4' range, look at the Anthology's or Bordeaux. The Anthology's excel at playing about any kind of music and sounding very good. The Bordeaux will take the mids/tweeter to a higher level than the Statements II with very detailed, crisp, clear midrange combined with a top end that matches the strengths of the mids. Another speaker to consider is the Finalist. The mids are really excellent and excel for music. They can be built as a monitor or Curt has a T/L cabinet he designed that would allow a smaller floor stander. All will provide excellent sound quality.
3. Yes, the sealed version loses about 30 Hz in F/3. It drops from 32 to 57 Hz. The sealed work great with a sub but I can't recommend them without one.
Also, something to think about is all our designs are open back mids so they need to be placed approximately 18" from the wall behind them with a similar or greater distance to the side walls. Large furniture can't be placed between that would block the rear soundwave from blending with the front soundwave. If you have a TV that sits between the speakers, wall mount it.

I was unaware that the open back designs need to have unobstructed space between the speakers- so that is a deal breaker as I can't redesign my living room.
I am also hesitant to give up my Bob Latino/ Russian oil capacitor Stereo 70- I mean it's supposed to confer enlightenment on the owner or something. Plus, it will help heat up my drafty house. And lit -up tubes look cool.....
So, I need to look for closed-back, more efficient design. Back to the drawing board......thanks again!!
