Overnight Sensations Kit

Post by lowpolyjoe » Fri Jan 03, 2014 3:46 pm

Hey all...

I see the OS MT kit here at Meniscus uses a different tweeter than the Parts express kit. It's a few bucks more at Meniscus and doesn't come with the enclosure. I don't need the enclosure and the price difference isn't much, but I'm curious about some opinions on which sounds better. It will be used in a 2.1 setup, powered by a Lepai amp and used primarily for tv/movies.

Anyone heard both variants?

Thanks,
Joe

I've not heard either version however if it were me I'd rather use 3/4" MDF vs 1/2" birch to begin with. From the close-ups I've seen of the Parts Express OS knock down kits they don't look that great.

Regarding the tweeter, Paul mentions in his plans that he chose the HiVi driver over the Dayton driver for sound.

“The HiVi tweeter worked great! It sounds at least as good--if not better--than the Dayton version. Personally, I think I like the sound of this HiVi a bit more. It doesn't measure very flat (neither does the Dayton), but it has the right bumps and dips in the right places. Best $8 tweeter I've ever heard ;-)

just my two cents...

the knockdowns on diysoundgroup.com are great for the os. i can't speak of the pe versions, but since they do a whooooole lot of them, i would think they are good. as far as the tweeters, i have the dayton version, and it is great. if paul says the he likes the hivi's, then go for it and report on what you hear.
