How do you cut long miter joints?
How do you cut long miter joints?
For those of you who use miter joints to build your cabinets, what sort of tooling, jigs, fixtures, etc. do you using to cut an accurate miter joint long enough for a speaker cabinet?
Re: How do you cut long miter joints?
Hi Muth,
Miters are probably best cut on a good table saw with a premium fence. We like to tilt our blade to 46 degrees (left hand tilt) which allows the outside edges to make better contact and lets the glue squeeze out the inside. You must clamp however to keep a square cabinet.
You could also do this with a shaper. I tried it once with our 1.5 HP unit and I still had trouble feeding the material. And of course, a CNC router would be the ticket.

Thank Mark.
You also answered what was going to be my next question: 'what's up with these 46 degree miters in the drawings you sent me?'

John,
To be accurate, the drawing should show that the angles are 44.5 degrees. We would use a 91 degree cutter to make the V groove. My drawing guy took my table saw method and applied it to the drawing by mistake.
